The Gold Coast Public Library
District patrons now have access to a wide variety of databases online. Online databases are computerized collections of information, indexed for easy retrieval. Some are subject specific while others contain a wide variety of information. Some provide abstracts or full text and some just provide a citation to an article from a periodical or other printed source. The information in databases is generally not available free on the Internet and is usually more reliable and authoritative since it has been produced or selected and edited by people with relevant subject expertise.

Your Gold Coast Public Library card number may be required to access some of these databases. When entering your card number do not include spaces.

 
   

AccessScience - Contains more than 8,500 up to date articles written for students, researchers, and the general public. Late breaking science news, biographies of famous scientists, a Student Center, tutorials, and over 13,000 high-quality illustrations and rich media content are available.

Community Resource Database of Long Island - The Community Resource Database of Long Island is a free, online directory of health, human service, and education agencies and programs on Long Island.  With detailed information on nearly 12,000 community resources, the CRD provides instant essential information for Long Islanders and is updated on a daily basis. Examples of agencies include health services, counseling & substance abuse services, support groups, child care and elder care and hot lines.

Credo - This database is an essential tool for homework and research projects. It includes full test reference sources covering every major topic. Includes over 60,000 images, audio files, interactive maps, citation formatter, cross references and much more.

EBSCO A-to-Z - Provides library patrons with a single, comprehensive list of titles to which they have access. Users can search for journals by keyword or browse an alphabetical list by title or subject.

EBSCO Book Source: Nonfiction
- Is a rich research database providing content representing a spectrum of works, including many of the complete series from top book publishers. It contains informative abstracts and full text for more than 2,000 popular nonfiction books. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

EBSCO Business Source - Contains more than 2,360 full-text magazines and journals covering every area of business. The database includes full text sources ranging from general periodicals such as Business Week, Forbes, Fortune, Fast Company and Red Herring to trade publications such as American Banker, Chemical Week, Electronic Business, Restaurant Business and Women’s Wear Daily to top management journals such as Harvard Business Review, California Management Review and Academy of Management Executive. Additional sources include over 1,200 country's economic reports from EIU, Global Insight. ICON Group watch, etc; 10,000 substantial company profiles: 3,146 industry reports and 528 market research reports. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

EBSCO Computer Source - Features nearly 300 full text periodicals covering topics such as computers, telecommunications, electronics and the Internet. Also provides a balance of full text technical journals and full text consumer computer titles.

EBSCO Consumer Health Complete
- The database contains full text articles from over 176 Health reference books and encyclopedias. Covers health and wellness from mainstream medicine as well as holistic and integrated medicine. Drug and herb medication is covered in detail.

EBSCO ERIC - The Educational Resource Information Center is a national information system supported by the U.S. Department of Education, the National Library of Education and the Office of Educational Research and Improvement. It provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index. ERIC provides full text of more than 2,200 digests along with references for additional information and citations and abstracts from over 1,000 educational and education-related journals. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

EBSCO Espanol - Research database entirely in Spanish.

EBSCO General Science Collection - Provides information on all aspects of the scientific world. The database offers full text coverage for more than 60 of the most popular science publications including Archaeology, Astronomy, International Wildlife, Popular Science, Science News, Scientific American, and many others. Subject areas covered include the observation, description, identification, and experimental investigation of phenomena, and the application of science to industrial or commercial objectives. General Science Collection is ideal for most schools and public libraries looking for a well-rounded science collection.


EBSCO Image Collection - Contains over 100,000 total images from sources such as the Canadian press and public domain.

EBSCO Kids Search - Kids Search is designed especially for youth in grades K-8. Searchable topics are from areas such as language arts, social studies and sports. A dictionary with the word of the day is available as well as an encyclopedia.

EBSCO Magill on Literature - Premier literary database combining MagillOnLiterature and MagillOnAuthors integrated into a single database. Comprising approximately 30,000 records, more than 1,000 images and a glossary of 1,310 terms. Contains editorially reviewed critical analyses, brief plot summaries, and extended character profiles covering works by more than 8,500 long- and short-fiction writers, poets, dramatists, essayists and philosophers. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

EBSCO MasterFile Premier - Contains full text for 2,055 periodicals covering general reference, business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues and much more. This database also contains full text for 362 reference books, 84,606 biographies, 88,463 primary source documents and an image collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

EBSCO MasterFile Select - Full text of over 760 magazines and newspapers covering a broad range of topics including general interest, business, health, science, humanities and multicultural. Available county-wide courtesy of NLS’ Co-Central Libraries.

EBSCO Medline - Provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine , Medline can search for abstracts from 4,600 current biomedical journals. Included are citations from Index Medicus, International Nursing Index, Index to Dental Literature, PREMEDLINE, AIDSLINE, BIOETHICSLINE and HealthSTAR. Examples of publications covered in Medline include: Accident and and Emergency Nursing, Addiction, Administration and Policy in Mental Health, Behavior Modification, Behavior Medicine, Cancer Detection and Prevention, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Journal of Advanced Nursing, Maternal and Child Health Journal, etc. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

EBSCO Middle Search Plus - Contains full text for more than 150 popular, middle school magazines and thousands of biographies, historical essays and student pamphlets. Additionally, Middle Search Plus contains primary source documents including Essential Documents in American History, reference books including the Funk & Wagnall’s New Encyclopedia and American Heritage Dictionary, 4th Edition, from Houghton Mifflin, The Encyclopedia of Animals, and an image collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags. Middle Search Plus also includes the Our States reference book series made up of 54 titles on each of the states, commonwealths, and territories of the United States. EBSCO Newspaper Source - Provides selected full text for 25 national and international newspapers, including USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, The Washington Post, The Times (London), The Toronto Star, etc. The database also contains selected full text for more than 200 regional newspapers, including the Miami Herald, the New York Daily News, The San Jose Mercury News, etc. In addition, full-text television and radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News, FOX News, NPR, etc. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

EBSCO NoveList - Your guide to fiction with a readers’ advisory for all ages. Over 120,000 fiction titles, 90,000 full-text reviews, 36,000 subject headings and a full spectrum of searching options. This database uses natural language searching. It also contains Read-alikes, which allows selection of similar books based on what has been described. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

EBSCO NoveList K-8 - Contains enhanced subject access for over 38,000 fiction titles aimed at the K-8 population in public library children’s rooms. Full-text reviews from sources like School Library Journal and Booklist are available for many titles. Also provides booktalks for selected young adult and children’s titles. It allows users to search by A=author, title, series, theme or topic. NoveList K-8 also contains Lexile measures for many titles, facilitating location of reading material geared to a user’s reading ability. EBSCO Point of View - This database is designed for the researcher who is faced with the challenge of evaluating issues.  Points of View provides a balanced series of over 800 essays representing multiple viewpoints, to help readers understand the full scope of a wide range of controversial subjects. Students can use this resource as a guide to debate, developing arguments, writing position papers, and for development of critical thinking skills.

EBSCO Primary Search - Primary Search contains full-text for more than 60 elementary school magazines.  In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 100 magazines.  Full-text is also available for over 100 student pamphlets. 

EBSCO Regional Business News - This site provides full text of regional business publications.

EBSCO Searchasaurus - Information on a wide range of general topics. Includes the World Almanac, Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia, and The Encyclopedia of Animals. Designed for elementary school children but useful for teen and adults as well. Searchasaurus is an exciting and easy way for kids to experience online searching. Available via NOVEL, a service of the New York State Library, federally funded by LSTA grants.

EBSCO Science Reference Center - A comprehensive research database that provides easy access to a multitude of full text science-specific content.  Designed to support middle and high school curriculum, Science Reference Center encompasses all disciplines of science.  Biology, chemistry, earth, space, life, physical, and environmental sciences are covered as well as health and medicine, science in society, science as inquiry, history of science, technology, scientists, and wildlife.

EBSCO Student Research Center - This database provides students in secondary schools the ability to search by topic. Resources include primary source documents, film, video, radio and television transcripts. A spotlight topic is featured daily as well as News of the Day.

EBSCO Text Only - Research database without images.

EBSCO TopicSearch - A current events database that covers social, political and economic issues, scientific discoveries and other popular topics. It contains articles from over 1,100 magazines and 150 newspapers, 400 pamphlets, 800 book reviews and 15,000 public opinion polls. Available via NOVEL, a service of the New York State Library, federally funded by LSTA grants.

Gale Associations Unlimited – A premier source for information on associations and professional societies. Contains information on approximately 450,000 international, national, regional, state and local organizations. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

Gale Biography and Genealogy Master Index – A first stop index tool for learning where to look for biographical material on people from all time periods, geographic locations and fields of endeavor. This comprehensive database contains more than 15,000,000 citations covering nearly 5,000,000 people and points to more than 1,000 publications where their biographies can be found. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

Gale Biography Resource Center - Is a comprehensive biographical reference database that meets the needs of library users in the areas of literature, science, business, entertainment, politics, sports, government, history, current events and the arts. Provides narrative biographies, thumbnail biographies, magazine articles and links to Web sites concerning an individual. Provides powerful capabilities for both novice and experienced users. Gale Business and Company Resource Center - A fully integrated resource bringing together company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information.

Gale Health and Wellness Resource Center & Alternative Health
- Use this Resource Center to find magazines, journals, newspapers, definitions, directories, and information on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, Prescription Drugs, Herbal remedies, and alternative or complementary treatments, etc. Included are links to diet, cancer, and health assessment sites as well as government databases. Material contained in this Resource Center is intended for informational purposes only.

Gale History Resource Center: Modern World - A comprehensive online collection of modern world historical information gathered into one source as an integrated collection of full-text periodicals, reference works, and primary source documents for the undergraduate level of study. Additionally, a significant amount of newly available reference content, supported by additional primary source materials as well as multimedia files, in periodic content loads over the course of this year. It has extensive inter-linking and cross-referencing of basic information, evidence and opinion. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

Gale History Resource Center: US
– A comprehensive online collection of US historical information gathered into one source as an integrated collection of full-text periodicals, reference works, and primary source documents for the undergraduate level of study. Gale Literature Resource Center
- Presents literature in all its dimensions for the broadest possible research. Its intuitive search interface provides powerful capabilities for both novice and experienced users. Searches may be by author, title, keyword, author type and literary-historical timeline. Provides access to more than 415,000 full-text journal articles from over 250 literary journals, nearly 44,000 critical essays, nearly 5,000 work overviews, nearly 6,000 links to related Web sites, more than 120,000 author biographies and nearly 3,000 author portraits. Gale National Newspaper Index - National Newspaper Index provides quick access to the indexing of America's top five newspapers in one seamless search: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post. Coverage is from 1977 – March 2005.

Gale Scribner Writers Series – Comprises approximately 1,600 original biocritical essays written and signed by noted scholars. It is an ideal starting point for research papers on literary works and figures. Each entry averages five pages in length and includes a concise essay, hyperlinks for cross referencing, a citation and biographical information that places the author’s work in personal and historical context. Gale Student Resource Center - Bronze – Aimed at high school students, this database offers easy access to award-winning content based on national curriculum standards. Searchable subjects include: Geography & Cultures, History, Literature, Person, and Science & Health. Gale Student Resource Center – Health Module
– Aimed at junior high and high school students, this database provides easy access to critical information on health issues affecting yourself and people you know. This health module focuses on Body Systems, Current Issues in Health, Diseases, Drugs, First Aid, Physical and Emotional Wellbeing and much more. There are links to 150 relevant Web sites, too. Gale Testing & Education Reference Center
– Helps you prepare for higher education and the work world in a variety of ways. Practice for specialized tests for colleges, graduate school, the military or trade school (ACT, ASVAB, CLEP. GED, GMAT CAT, SAT, TOEFL and more). Provides help in writing admissions application essays or resumes. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site.

Gale Virtual Reference Collection - This source contains 12 searchable online reference titles focusing on health, history and business. Included are: The Gale Encyclopedias of Alternative Medicine, Cancer, Genetic Disorders, Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health; The American Revolution Reference Library, the American Civil War Reference Library, Major Acts of Congress, History Behind the Headlines, The Encyclopedia of Small Business, Gale Encyclopedia of E-Commerce, and the Business Plans Handbook, volumes 5-10.

Greenwood Daily Life Online
Browse by time period, region, or subject, and understand historical context with chronologies and timelines based on the 6 volume Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life and the 34 volume Daily Life Through History series, plus related history reference works from both Greenwood and Praeger Press.  Also included are more than 1,200 color and black-and-white images, primary documents, and vetted web links to museums, galleries, and more.

Grolier Kids Online - This database is geared specifically towards elementary school students to make research easy and simple. Included are encyclopedia articles, magazines, websites and an interactive atlas and dictionary.  Other encyclopedias focus on biographies, the history of the United States and science projects.  NewsNow features interesting kid friendly news that is updated frequently to help students stay up to date with current events.

NewsBytes has three top science stories every week, plus updates and lesson plans. Other features are science projects, biographies, games, puzzles, brain teasers and a science fact finder. Includes information about painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts, and photography from prehistory to the present day. Grove’s Dictionary of Music - Authoritative and comprehensive source of information about music, musicians and musical instruments from prehistoric to contemporary times. Includes full text of the print editions of Grove’s Dictionary of Music, Dictionary of Opera and 20th Century Music. Available county-wide courtesy of NLS’ Co-Central Libraries.

Info Trac Custom Newspapers - Search a collection of 150 newspapers, both national and international.

Info Trac Informe - This is an Infotrac database that provides indexing, images and full-text of popular Hispanic magazines, not just translations. The text of the articles is in Spanish, and some in English, as originally published.

Info Trac Junior Edition - This periodical database is designed for students in junior high and middle school. Use the database to find information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and much more. Available via NOVEL, a service of the New York State Library, federally funded by LSTA grants.

Learning Express - Provides completely interactive online test preparation and practice for Civil Service, GED, SAT, U.S. citizen test, law enforcement, real estate, and 4th and 8th grade performance tests, plus many others. You must have your Gold Coast Public Library card number available to access this site. To access this site, use your library card number for the username and then create your own password. ( First time only). From then on, use your card number and password each time you want to access the database.

LitFinder - Comprehensive searchable lists of poems, stories, essays, plays and speeches. This reference includes 125,000 full-text poems including 25,000 copyrighted poems and 800,000 poem citations; thousands of full-text stories, explanations and biographies; the most complete single source of full-text plays; and the best known speeches of the past 2,500 years. Live Homework Help - Provides help from real, live tutors via the internet. This program is for 4th- to 12th-grade students and is available every day from 3 PM to 8 PM. It connects to a live tutor for up to 20 minutes of one-on-one help. Easy to use--click on the link above, enter student’s grade level and the subject he or she needs help in and he or she is instantly connected to an expert tutor. Morningstar - Identify stocks or mutual funds that meet your needs. Create your own stock or mutual fund screens or use Morningstar screens to get ideas on stocks and funds. You can also delve into a stock or fund you are interested in and find out what Morningstar analysts have to say about it. Nassau Digital Doorway - Nassau Digital Doorway is a collection of downloadable media and contains the largest amount of bestselling novels. Newsday - Search for full-text articles from 1985 to the present.

NextReads - Want to know what to read next? NextReads is an online newsletter that provides reading suggestions for adults and children which have been compiled by librarians and grouped by genre. Newsletters are sent to subscribers through e-mail on a regularly scheduled basis. Sign up today to receive your newsletters!

(New York Online Access to Health) - Authoritative, award-winning health information site which provides information in both English and Spanish. This site is sponsored by a variety of libraries and library organizations in and around New York City including the New York Academy of Medicine.

ProQuest Ancestry Library
(In library use only)- A genealogical research tool that contains over 4,000 databases. It has unparalleled coverage of the United States and the United Kingdom, including census, vital, church, court, and immigration records, as well as record collections from Canada and other areas. Key collections include the U.S. Federal Census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930; the Map Center containing more than 1,000 historical maps; Federal Slave Narratives; and a strong Civil War collection. Ancestry Library Edition updates continually, with more indexes and original images added all the time.

ProQuest Heritage - A genealogical research database that allow you to search the U.S. Federal Census records from 1790 to 1930; Search books to find information on people and places described in over 25,000 family and local histories; and search Persi to find information about people and places from this index of over 1.6 million genealogy and local history articles. Reference USA - Is an online reference service for use as a reference tool in libraries. This database contains detailed information on more than 12 million U. S. businesses; 102 million U.S. residents; 683,000 U.S. health care providers; 1 million Canadian businesses; and 11 million Canadian residents. Salud Para Todos - This database provides full-text Spanish-language information from 300 publications for a wide variety of medical and health-related topics and is designed to make useful health information more readily accessible for Spanish-speaking consumers and patients.

Tumble Book Library - TumbleBook Library is for children who love picture books. Here they can find animated, talking picture books, puzzles, and educational games as well as 'books' in other languages. There is language arts support in the form of book annotations, vocabulary lessons, reading comprehension quizzes, book reviews and more. It's a great resource for parents to use with their children.

TumbleReadables - This online collection of read-along titles for elementary, middle school, and high school students features adjustable online text and complete audio narration. Sentences are highlighted as they are being read and the pages turn automatically. The collection features chapter books, early readers, YA/Teen Novels, high interest/low level books for both middle school and high school students, plus classics of American and English literature. Read-Alongs are great for emergent, struggling, and reluctant readers, as well as being an excellent tool for ESL.

Twayne’s Author Series - Search the content of more than 600 books that comprise the Twayne’s print series: United States Authors, English Authors, and World Authors.
